Pioneer™ super-minimalist system

Hot on the heels of its new black-tastic plasma televisions and first European Blu-ray player, Pioneer has ripped the dustsheets off its new all-in-one home cinema system, the LX01.

The DVD and CD compatible system is designed to fit in with the new plasmas, boasting a dazzlingly glossy black finish, touchscreen remote and separate LED display unit.

It upscales DVD to 1080p via HDMI and sports a 250GB hard drive that can be used to store TV programmes from the built-in Freeview tuner, not to mention lossless audio ripped from your CDs (in which case track and album info is provided by Gracenote) or transferred directly from your PC. You can also record video from the hard disk onto DVD.

Audio is taken care of by four surround speakers and a hefty subwoofer. The satellite speakers have a three dimensional shape, so are able to project sound up towards your ceiling as well as towards your sitting position; the idea is to create a fuller sound, although the lack of a dedicated centre speaker means that the LX01 might struggle to reproduce movie dialogue as clearly as some systems.

The system is due for launch until October, and Pioneer has yet to reveal a price. Weâ™ll keep you posted.

Panasonic TH-42PX60U Plasma HDTV, SA-XR57 A/V Receiver, DMR-EH55 DVR/DVD Recorder, and SB-TP100 Speaker System

HDMI is a wonderful invention filled with promise. When utilized to its fullest, it can offer the best of both worlds: uncompressed audio and video signals and intelligent, two-way communication over a single cable. Manufacturers have long teased us with talk of complete home theater systems that you can set up using just two or three cables, but the reality has fallen far short of the promise. Most designers have used HDMI only as a top-grade video connector, paying little attention to its audio and communication abilities. Armed with the new HDMI 1.2a spec (the products here were designed and released before 1.3 was finalized), Panasonic is aiming for the ultimate in connection and control with their new EZ Sync HDAVI Control products.

EZ Sync is a proprietary system that allows new Panasonic receivers, DVD players, and flat-panel TVs to communicate with one another over an HDMI connection. The feature won’t be of much use to someone looking to buy a single product, like a DVD player. Its appeal is in its ability to improve setup and control of a complete system; so how could we resist putting EZ Sync to the test in an all-Panasonic Spotlight review? I requested three EZ Sync products: the DMR-EH55 DVR/

DVD recorder ($500), the SA-XR57 7.1-channel A/V receiver ($400), and the TH-42PX60U 42-inch plasma HDTV ($2,500). Rounding out the Panasonic package were the SB-TP100 5.1-channel speaker system ($1,700) and the SH-FX60 wireless transmitter ($150), which allows for wireless setup of your surround speakers.

Count the Cables
It took me much longer to unpack and organize the different components than it did to connect them. I almost teared up when I realized that basic setup required just two HDMI interconnects (not included): one from the DVD recorder to the A/V receiver and one from the receiver to the HDTV. The DVD recorder can output PCM, multichannel Dolby Digital and DTS, and two-channel DVD-Audio through HDMI; the HDMI 1.2a spec allows for multichannel, high-resolution audio, but Panasonic opted not to include SACD or multichannel DVD-Audio playback. Given the system’s low price point and the two formats’ success rate thus far, I can’t really blame them.

You still have to run speaker wire and a subwoofer cable, and Panasonic supplies both. If you don’t wish to run wire around the room to your surrounds, the SH-FX60 is a handy add-on. Simply connect your surround speaker wires to the SH-FX60 receiver in the back of the room; it receives the audio signal via RF from a transmitter that plugs discreetly into a slot in the SA-XR57’s back panel. The transmitter and receiver communicate in the 2.4-gigahertz band, which interfered with my wireless network router located across the room. I quickly solved the problem by changing channels on my router. Panasonic recommends that you place the SH-FX60’s receiver unit no farther than 33 feet from the transmitter; I was able to establish a connection up to 40 feet away, but the signal wasn’t stable at that distance. As a bonus, the SH-FX60’s receiver unit includes a music port, to which you can attach an iPod or other auxiliary device to listen to music through your main system.

That’s all the setup required for a DVD-only entertainment system. Of course, the more sources you wish to incorporate, the more cables you must add. Lest we forget, the DMR-EH55 is also a DVR with a 200-gigabyte hard drive, which means it needs a TV source. S-video, composite, and RF are your video-input options, and the DMR-EH55 will pass on these input signals through the HDMI output to the receiver. TV Guide On Screen is the DMR-EH55’s program guide of choice; unfortunately, the recorder never successfully downloaded program-guide info for my digital cable service, so I could only set manual recordings. I can’t say for sure that the fault lies with the recorder, as Adelphia was handing service over to Time Warner during my review period, which could have affected the process.

To add HD sources, the easiest route is to feed the video signals directly to the TH-42PX60U plasma’s HDMI and component video inputs and send audio to the receiver. If you prefer to switch video signals through your receiver, prepare for more cable clutter. The SA-XR57 receiver only has one HDMI input, intended for use with a DVD player. It does offer dual high-bandwidth component video inputs and one output, but it doesn’t convert component video input to HDMI output, so you have to run both component and HDMI cable to your TV. I would soon discover that EZ Sync makes this less of an issue.

Medion GoPal PNA 460, 465, 470 Widescreen GPS

Medion has launched a broader GPS line by adding three new widescreen flat form factor GoPal devices - the GoPal PNA460, GoPal PNA465 and GoPal PNA470. All three are light (about 7 ounces), and small 5.4″ x 3.8″ x 0.8 “. Of course all offer navigation with 2D and 3D views, spoken guidance and are pre-loaded with NAVTEQ maps as well as interestingly enough Berlitz City Guides for 50 european cities. A speed camera database is also pre-loaded. All feature the SiRF star III chipset.

The entry-level GoPal PNA 460, with its 4.3-inch TFT widescreen has UK and Ireland maps loaded on a 256MB card. The unit also has a nice little MP3 player and picture viewer.

The three units are available in teh UK and are priced at £199, £259 and £299, respectively, which is about $350, $460, and $530.

The GoPal PNA 465 adds TMC traffic to help get around traffic jams, while the GoPal 470 includes integrated Bluetooth.

This all just underlines my thoughts that so many electronics firms are coming out with Flat Form Factor GPS units, that Flat, and WIDE are the future of GPS devices.

The limitation of the usual 10bit DAC become in particular apparent while using large screens and projectors.
* Progressive Scan component video for optimized image quality
Progressive Scan doubles the vertical resolution of the image resulting in a noticeably sharper picture. Instead of sending a field comprising the odd lines to the screen first, followed by the field with the even lines, both fields are written at one time. A full image is created instantaneously, using the maximum resolution. At such a speed, your eye perceives a sharper picture with no line structure.

Mambo Digital Media-X PhotoBank Jukebox

What struck me most about the photo of the Mambo Digital Media-X PhotoBank Jukebox on the right is the ability to insert an MMC/SD memory card into what is a jukebox style portable. When you think about it the idea makes quite a bit of sense.

As almost all other electronic products matured in the market and prices dropped, most households ended up acquiring multiple VCR’s, TV’s and cassette players. It stands to reason that the same will happen to newer digital products like cameras, MP3 players and Tivo/ReplayTV devices. In some homes it already has. Now take that fact and leverage another one. A portable jukebox player with 10GB or more of space can easily house and transfer those photo and music files, feeding other forms of digital devices and saving

continual trips to the PC

Enter the Mambo Digital Media-X PhotoBank. By giving the unit the ability to read and write onto a flash memory card the conveniences become apparent. There are plenty of owners of portable flash players who are tired of constantly running back and forth to their system every time they want to change the 15 tunes on their player. They yearn for a 20GB unit like the PhotoBank Jukebox, but don’t want to give up the size of their flash unit because its much lighter weight and smaller dimensions are more convenient for certain places like the gym.

A jukebox unit like the Mambo offers the best of both worlds as it doesn’t replace the older unit, but instead offers it new life by presenting a more convenient way to change the music files on the flash card. The older player now becomes exclusively the exercise unit, saving wear and tear on the newer one whose size made it less suitable for the task anyway.

The Mambo is not the only MP3 portable to have this idea actually. The recently released Archos Jukbox Multimedia will offer a photo module as an option that does the same thing. The difference is the Digital Media-X PhotoBank has it built into the structure of the unit without the need to purchase an add on piece.

The features on the Digital Media-X PhotoBank are pretty extensive. The Digital Media-X PhotoBank first and foremost is an MP3 player supporting the MP3 and WMA formats. Offering 20GB of storage the unit weighs in at 9.8 ounces, lighter than the RCA LYRA Personal Jukebox (11oz) and the Creative Nomad 3 (14oz), but more than the Rio Riot (8.8oz) and the Apple iPod (6.5oz). All of the competing unit’s also use a 2.5-inch hard drive except for the iPod whose Toshiba 1.8-inch drive accounts for its weight savings.

The unit offers a healthy 8MB of internal buffer for anti-shock and is the third unit we have come across to adopt the USB 2.0 standard for file transfers (The iPod and the Nomad 3 use FireWire). USB 2.0 transfers files roughly 40 times faster than USB 1.1.

The Mambo Digital Media-X PhotoBank allows both the storage of photo files in the JPEG format . Viewing these files from the player takes the purchase of an optional expansion unit called the Photo Expansion Box ($49.95 MSRP). The unit also supports the MPEG format, hinting that a video display module is in the works

Leopard broke Tigger?

The new version of Apple’s operating system, Mac OS X Leopard (10.5), has already sold altogether - as preinstalled on computers and on disks. Is this a new word in science and technology, or both, additional decorations?

We decided to take two identical MacBook laptops, one of which a previous version of Mac OS X - Tiger, and the other - the new, and compare them abundantly pripraviv screenshots.
So, the first innovation - “clean desk”. In Apple seems to have decided that any lost a bunch of different desktop icons - ideologically incorrect because users prefer to place it some beautiful wallpaper, which means that they must always be seen. To this end, top row became translucent menus and icons in the Dock can now be grouped in the “stack” (Stacks). In so doing you for quick access to files and applications is not a bunch zavalivaete desktop icons, and call these heaps of icons only when needed. “Stopki” can be grouped according to different criteria: for example, by default in a separate pile now “unofficial” downloadable files (previously they remained on the desktop). Overall, the order primarily - and in this respect the new operating system, of course, has the advantage of that is, the expense of 1:0 in favour of “Leopard”.

The second innovation - is a revised Finder. This technology was implemented three years ago in the Tigray, but now it is markedly improved.

First, it is now showing icons of files not in the same form for each file type, and each is a “miniature”, reflecting the content - for example, the icon for any graphic file can see that inside there for the picture. Finder reworked interface very much and somehow resembles iTunes: various locations in the network and on the hard drive in the merged group, which can stay and expand here same interface for searching files on different criteria - for example, type or time changes. Very badly, by the way, it reminds search engine in Windows. Also in the new Finder opportunity “rassharit” files and folders on the Internet and have access anywhere in the world - “Back to my Mac”. True, this service is available only to fee and signed up for corporate “apple” service (. Mac).

But the biggest innovation is the ability to view files in the Finder is not in the form of lists or icons, but in the form of “prevyushek” for each file. When choosing this method of submission appears before us a sort of “book”, which could be “movement” leafing slider to the left-right - especially convenient to do so at tachpade two fingers. In the first address to a folder, of course, the “loading” of newly created prevyushek took a few seconds and the system podtormazhivaet little while, but later “prolistyvaniyah” all without zapinok. It is possible to immediately go and file in the local network - very convenient when you do not know exactly where he is and how to say. Overall, 2:0 in favour of “Leopard”.

A third innovation is rising from the ears “prevyushek”. The essence of it was that in the “Leopard” there is a Quick Look feature, which lets you view files without starting the application to create them. So, for example, a short note in Microsoft Word format can be read and easily without having to download bulky text editor. The program, as stated understands most file formats - and, it must be admitted, she really understands all common formats: At least we did not find in a computer file that she would not be able to display. Rather, of course, WinRAR archive it still has “no” on the teeth, so well, for his support still need to install the appropriate software archiver. However, the usefulness of charge, Quick Look, we do not have noticed - in our view, it is better to be able to open the file with something else, and do not develop a habit of “want to see - opening the way I want to edit - open up a chance.” Eventually, the creative impulse could come at any time. We are, of course, not agitating for the use of Photoshop to view photo albums, but still a draw here - 3:1.

Sony's new Cyber-shot DSC-W300 digital camera is expected to be among the industry's most pocketable, high resolution point-and-shoot digital cameras.

The camera announced yesterday integrates a 13.6 megapixel CCD imager along with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 3x optical zoom lens, a 2.7-inch LCD screen and an eye-level viewfinder in a compact size. With its ultra-hard titanium coating, the model offers a premium look and finish that is highly-resistant to scratches and messy fingerprints.

The W300 camera newly features an “extra high-speed” burst mode that can shoot three-megapixel photos at five frames per second, ideal for fast-action shooting of sports, pets or children.

In addition to the blur-reducing effects of Super SteadyShot optical image stabilization, the camera also has a new "extra high sensitivity" mode (up to ISO 6400 in this mode only) to help minimize blurry photos when shooting in challenging lighting conditions, such as indoors or at twilight, even without a flash.

Sony’s Smile Shutter technology prioritizes the faces of children or adults so that the camera takes the photo at the moment the intended subject smiles. Improved face detection technology can also prioritize child or adult faces as the basis for the camera to apply focus, exposure, white balance and flash color controls for up to eight faces in the camera’s frame.

The model’s intelligent scene recognition technology automatically can detect five different types of scenes and optimize the camera settings for those conditions for a better photo. And advanced mode can take two shots almost immediately – one with standard automatic settings and the other with optimized settings.

The DSC-W300 camera and optional accessories will be available in the US in May for about $350 USD.

Sony refreshes Bravia home theater line for 2008

In 2007, Sony extended the previously TV-only Bravia moniker to cover its flagship all-in-one home theater systems for the first time. The branding extension must've been a success, because a new round of Bravia home-theater-in-a-box systems (HTIBs) is on deck for 2008. All four 2008 Bravia models will include the following baseline features. (Where applicable, we've taken the liberty of translating many of the terms from Sony-ese into English.)

* Single chassis DVD receiver: The amplifier/receiver includes a built-in 5-disc CD/DVD changer, with built-in support for standard Dolby and DTS surround modes.
* HDMI output: DVDs can be upscaled to 1080p resolution when connected to compatible HDTVs.
* 5.1 surround sound: Each system includes five satellite speakers and a subwoofer.
* Bravia Theatre Sync: Sony's implementation of HDMI-CEC lets the system interact with compatible Sony TVs when they're connected via HDMI, automating some processes such as input switching.
* Digital Cinema Auto Calibration (DCAC): This is simply the company's name for the built-in system that customizes the speaker levels to the particular sonics of your room.
* Dialogue Audio Enhancer: Otherwise known as "midnight mode," this feature normalizes volume levels for late-night viewing.
* DM Port compatibility: All Bravia systems include support for Sony's proprietary DM Port accessories: the TDM-NC1 Wi-Fi music streamer, the TDM-NW1 Sony Walkman MP3 player dock, and the TDM-BT1 Bluetooth adapter, all of which must be purchased separately.
* Outboard iPod dock: The fourth DM Port accessory, the TDM-IP1 iPod dock, is included.
* Wireless rear speakers: Each Bravia model includes an option to set up the two rear speakers wirelessly. (Whether the wireless speaker accessory is included or needs to be purchased separately varies from model to model.)
* S-AIR compatibility: New for 2008, the Bravia systems are compatible with Sony's proprietary S-AIR wireless technology, meaning they can stream music to a small speaker system (the AIR-SA10) located elsewhere in the home. Tiny Tactile MP3 Player Concept

We’re always on the lookout for MP3 players; especially those that are as small as possible – so they not only become convenient to carry but also give us that 007ish feel. And so, we were intrigued to hear that Yanko Designs have come up with a 'Tactile MP3 player'.

This device appears to be the size of a large Crocin tablet, with a shiny reflective surface on one side and a plain surface on the other. The plain side appears to have tiny raised dots, kind of like Braille. If you’ve figured it out, yup, those are the buttons for navigation.

The device is only at the conceptual stage as of now, so if you’re wondering where you can pick one up, sorry folks, you'll have to hold your horses. Stay tuned.

ViewSonic Launches Pro8100 HT Projector

After killer LCD monitors, ViewSonic has announced its entrance into the "luxury home theater lifestyle" category with the first offering in its Precision Series, the Pro8100 home theater projector. Just like every new release, Viewsonic claims that their Series of displays will "combine the latest in color performance, technology and design to provide high image quality with both standard and high definition sources".

The Pro8100 uses ViewSonic's proprietary Precision Color System (PCS), an image enhancement technology that renders natural colors with extensive tuning capabilities. PCS features include 3D color management, auto contrast, H-Edge enhancement, 33 levels of gamma correction and a daylight mode function to automatically adjust the image based on the lighting environment. Creative Adds More to The Zen Stone

It would seem like Creative just loves adding onto their already existing little player the Zen Stone. Their second version, the Zen Stone plus was equipped with a small OLED display and now they’ve taken it up a notch. The newest addition to the ‘Stone’ clan is the Zen Stone with Speaker.

Zen Stone

The inbuilt speaker will be present in both models, the Zen stone and the Zen Stone plus with the display. Their storage capacities will also remain unchanged.

Available in elegant matte black, dark blue, pink or champagne, the new ZEN Stone players feature a smooth, contoured design and are still very tiny players. A translucent silicon skin with a clip is included with the box, and an armband and ultra-portable keychain with a tiny case that carries the player are additional accessories that are available separately.

Zen Stone Plus

“The ZEN Stone and ZEN Stone Plus with built-in speakers free people from having to wear headphones to listen to their portable music,” says Sim Wong Hoo, chairman and CEO of Creative. “They enable users to enjoy music when they are on a walk or in a group and want to enjoy a conversation or hear what's going on around them,” he adds. “It's hard to believe that such incredibly small players can have a speaker that sounds so good, enabling people to share their music with friends, without headphones.”

Everything about the players will remain unchanged with regards to the drag and drop feature for file transfer and 3.5mm earphone out. The ZEN Stone will be available in 1GB and 2GB models; the ZEN Stone Plus, with screen, FM radio, voice recording, clock/stopwatch and customizable equalizer settings, will be available in 2GB and 4GB models.
