Pioneer™ super-minimalist system

Monday, June 16, 2008

Hot on the heels of its new black-tastic plasma televisions and first European Blu-ray player, Pioneer has ripped the dustsheets off its new all-in-one home cinema system, the LX01.

The DVD and CD compatible system is designed to fit in with the new plasmas, boasting a dazzlingly glossy black finish, touchscreen remote and separate LED display unit.

It upscales DVD to 1080p via HDMI and sports a 250GB hard drive that can be used to store TV programmes from the built-in Freeview tuner, not to mention lossless audio ripped from your CDs (in which case track and album info is provided by Gracenote) or transferred directly from your PC. You can also record video from the hard disk onto DVD.

Audio is taken care of by four surround speakers and a hefty subwoofer. The satellite speakers have a three dimensional shape, so are able to project sound up towards your ceiling as well as towards your sitting position; the idea is to create a fuller sound, although the lack of a dedicated centre speaker means that the LX01 might struggle to reproduce movie dialogue as clearly as some systems.

The system is due for launch until October, and Pioneer has yet to reveal a price. Weâ™ll keep you posted.
